Backstory

While serving as the U.S. representative for Wyoming’s at-large congressional district from 2017 to 2023, Cheney chaired the House Republican Conference, the third-highest position in the House Republican leadership, from 2019 to 2021, and served as the Vice Chair of the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol. She was also a member of the House Armed Services Committee, China Task Force, Natural Resources Committee, and the House Committee on Rules. Cheney served previously at the State Department as the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, and in positions for USAID and the Department of State working in Poland, Hungary, Russia, and Ukraine.

Leadership and Courage in Uncertain Times

Throughout the conversation, a recurring theme was the necessity of courage in leadership. Reflecting on her own experiences, Cheney emphasized, "We have to realize that some things matter. And you get to the point where you have to make those decisions." Her words serve as a reminder that true leadership often requires making difficult choices that align with one’s principles, even when faced with adversity.

Building Bridges Across Divides

Cheney discussed the unlikely collaboration with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi during the January 6th committee. "The first thing is to step away from stereotype,” she said. “And to step away from preconceived ideas about people with whom you disagree." Her ability to find common ground and work towards a unified goal underscores the power of collaboration in overcoming significant challenges.

Navigating the Challenges of Political Leadership

The conversation also touched on the increasing stress and personal attacks that come with political leadership. Cheney acknowledged the intensity of criticism but offered practical strategies for staying committed. She shared, "Part of it is understanding, very clearly, what is right. Set your determination that you're going to do the next right thing."

Embracing Authenticity and Tackling Misinformation

In an era of rapid information exchange and social media influence, Cheney noted the growing appeal of authentic long-form discussions, such as podcasts, in bridging communication gaps. She observed, "Part of the reason that podcasts have filled such a void in our communications world is because of authenticity."

Closing Thoughts

“May none but honest and wise men rule under this roof,” is an inscription that appears on a 1902 fireplace mantel in the White House. The inscription was taken from a letter President John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail back in 1800 during his first few days of living in the White House. “I'm spending a lot of time these days reading about our founding generation,” Cheney said. “I think this is a good standard for us to live by.”
