MPI Releases New Safety & Security Guide, Announces Revamped CMM Program

June 7, 2018

Last year, Meeting Professionals International (MPI), in conjunction with the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4) developed the MPI Academy Emergency Preparedness for Meetings and Events Certificate Course.

Now, MPI has created a new asset designed to serve as a reference tool for planners to use in developing safety and security plans and procedures.

“The Essential Guide to Safety and Security: Best Practices for Meeting and Event Planning 2018” contains best practices to help meeting and event planners identify vulnerabilities, protect assets and mitigate risk.

The guide is complimentary for all MPI members, and can be purchased by non-members for $49. It will be released on Jun. 18, and is currently available for pre-order.

“Duty of care for attendees is an important responsibility of planners, and as the largest industry association focused on the development of event professionals, MPI is working to provide the best education and tools to assist meeting planners and event organizers elevate their capabilities around duty of care,” said Paul Van Deventer, president and CEO of MPI.

He added, “Our new safety and security best practices guide is the first of its kind for our industry. We believe it will become a critical resource and plan to review, refine and update the best practices every year so that the guide remains timely and relevant.”

The association also stated a commitment to develop educational content, research reports and case studies based on the guide’s recommended practices. This content will be launched later this year and in 2019.

MPI also announced education-based collaborations with the Indiana University Kelley School of Business and the IUPUI Department of Tourism, Conventions and Event Management around the MPI Certificate in Meeting Management (CMM) Program

MPI Academy optimizes the CMM Program every few years, and will be revamping the curriculum to reflect the program's new tagline, "Executive Leadership for the Business of Meetings."

The intensive participatory training program covers topics critical for meeting and event industry professionals to master, including risk mitigation; business analytics and compliance; and strategic negotiation. The new curriculum will deliver education similar to that provided by an executive master’s program.

Upcoming CMM classes scheduled for 2018 will take place Sept. 17-20 and Dec. 10-13, at IUPUI in Indianapolis.
