Giants Enterprises Creates Unique Virtual Experience for Annual Race Event

August 18, 2020

With the widespread cancellation of corporate events and no clear timeline of when they may be back in person again, it’s a good time to look for inspiration on ways to hold a truly unique virtual event.

For the first time in its 11-year history, the San Francisco Giant Race presented by Alaska Airlines is going completely virtual.

Previously scheduled for the Labor Day weekend, Sept. 4-6, at Oracle Park in San Francisco, the Giant Race Series’ flagship event now will be held virtually Sept. 6 because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

This annual series — held in Scottsdale, Sacramento, San Jose and San Francisco — is produced by Giants Enterprises, the development and entrepreneurial arm of the San Francisco Giants Major League Baseball franchise.

“We will miss all of our participants gathering before dawn at Oracle Park and the endless finish line high-fives, but the decision to change to a virtual event is for the collective safety of our participants, fans and staff,” said Stephen Revetria, president of Giants Enterprises.

The event welcomes participants from all over the world to run/walk on their own. Each competitor will receive a Giants-branded neck gaiter, curated audio playlists from the Giants coaching staff (including favorites by MLB coach and Giant Race alum Alyssa Nakken) and a custom virtual finisher certificate.

Additionally, participants can create a DIY finish line and receive race goodies like an official Giant Race runner tee, medal, bib and the coveted annual official Bobblehead.

The Giant Race also has enlisted some of its Giants baseball staff’s next-generation mental skills coaching to help motivate runners with a series of #MindfulnessMonday posts shared via the event’s Instagram channel.

A pillar of the Giants Organizational Health & Wellness initiative, the event draws individuals from around California and the country.

This year, given the different landscape as a result of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, a special emphasis for the event is connecting Giants fans with healthy living.
