9 New and Upcoming, Totally Trendy Event Spaces in New York City

June 27, 2019

New York City has been making tourism headlines this summer for the big debut of Hudson Yards, which officially opened in March as the city’s newest neighborhood. It has more than 100 shops and restaurants, plus offices, 14 acres of outdoor space, public art and new cultural institutions like The Shed. It will also be home to the world’s first Equinox Hotel next month. Read on for more ideas on where to plan in Hudson Yards and beyond in the Big Apple.

Open Now

Those with corporate or individual membership, as well as nonprofits, can hold events at The Shed, the latest cultural space within Hudson Yards. Opened in April, this 200,000-square-foot, $475 million arts center is a sight to behold, with a façade made from luminescent panels. It can host events for up to 2,000 guests, from corporate receptions and dinners to award shows, meetings and product launches. Exclusive catering for The Shed is provided by Union Square Events.

The latest hotel in Queens is really taking off. Opened in May, The TWA Hotel is a unique property that opened at JFK International Airport with 512 guest rooms and 50,000 square feet of meeting space. Not only is it easy to access for attendees flying in and out of the city, TWA is a seriously cool spot to be even if you’re not traveling. Guests will love the retro-inspired menu at the Sunken Lounge, and the 10,000-sq.-ft. rooftop spot has an infinity pool and overlooks the runways.

Opened in February, the glamorous new Times Square Edition hotel is the hottest hangout spot in Manhattan right now. With 452 rooms and a high-class, 1,300-sq.-ft. penthouse, it’s also a big draw for corporate meetings. Four food and beverage venues on-site are all available for private bookings, and the edgy Paradise Club cabaret on property is sure to be a huge hit for entertainment.

In May, Sotheby’s revealed a dramatic expansion of its New York exhibition galleries, increasing the square footage of its four floors in Lenox Hill to 90,000 (from its previous 67,000 sq. ft.) and replacing the wide, open floors with more functional rooms for showcasing art. The good news for meeting planners: Each of the nine salons can be booked for private events, including the elegant space called The Library, designed by the Italian clothing brand Loro Piana.

A classic choice for New York meetings, The Plaza New York this year restored its Edwardian Room as a beautiful event space. Overlooking Central Park and Fifth Avenue, the 2,500-sq.-ft. space is done in Spanish Renaissance Revival style and can host up to 300 people for events.

Coming Soon

The much-anticipated Equinox Hotel, Hudson Yards — the elite fitness brand’s first foray into hospitality — will open its doors in July. The hotel’s fitness center will be one-of-a-kind, with studios for everything from cycling to yoga, barre and pilates, to indoor and outdoor pools and luxury locker rooms. For meetings, Equinox will have 5,500 sq. ft. of event space, and health-conscious groups will salivate over the waistline-friendly, delicious fare at the 24th-floor restaurant. Need an afternoon pick-me-up? Try an adaptogenic superfood latte from the bar.

Adding to the hot neighborhood of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, Hotel Indigo will open late this summer with ultra-contemporary architecture. The hotel will have 10,000 sq. ft. of flexible space and a ballroom holding up to 1,000 guests, but the gem for meeting planners will surely be the outdoor event space and rooftop pool deck.

Coming late this fall, The Glasshouse will open its second location on the northern end of Midtown West. It will have 75,000 sq. ft. of event space that can hold up to 1,800 guests. Outdoor terraces and floor-to-ceiling windows will provide spectacular views of both the skyline and the Hudson River, and a VIP lounge and two full-service commercial kitchens further add to the property’s draw for corporate events. The first location of The Glasshouse is in Chelsea.

Javits Center is undergoing a $1.5 billion renovation. Upon completion in 2021, the all-new convention center will have expanded its current meeting space by five times and added a 1-acre roof farm for sustainable catering. The rooftop pavilion and a new event hall that can hold up to 5,000 will be big draws for meetings and conferences. In line with Javits’ commitment to sustainability, the center will also be home to the largest solar generation project in the city, expected to offset more than 1.3 million pounds of carbon emissions per year.
